Honorable Mention
A New Chapter
E V Brooks (lia)

White lavender decorates his desk. The touch of a woman
amongst beeswax and turpentine gathers under his ribs
as he writes. He inhales. Slow rivers run
beneath his fingers as a sycamore flickers on the pane.

Brambles and moss clambered over the greenhouse,
smothered bulbs and cuttings when she first arrived.
Rain whispered on the garden as sparrows gathered
in the branches of silver birch and willow. He watched her

from the window whilst she pushed back the nettles, filled
the pond with frogs and lilies and bound sweet peas to bamboo.
She knelt on his path, cleared purple thistles that pricked
her small earth hands as quiet sun gathered her hair gold.

He sets down the pen, follows her through the house,
traces her steps from room to room. Vases fill with flowers,
photographs find their frames as he sits beside her
on the grass. The trees sway. He smiles and takes his time.
